BLUE ZONES

Live Longer - Happier - Healthier

Blue Zones are regions of the world where people live longer and have lower rates of chronic diseases than the rest of the world population on average.

There are 5 Blue Zones in the world, and we are located in one!

The region of Nicoya, an 80-mile Peninsula on the Pacific Costa of Costa Rica is known for its happy people and 'Pura Vida' lifestyle. People in the Nicoya region often reach an impressive milestone, living beyond 90 years old.

It was introduced as a Blue Zone in 2004.

What makes people in Blue Zones live long and healthy lives?

There are a number of factors that contribute to the long life expectancy in the Nicoya region. A few of the main things that people credit to achieving the Blue Zone Costa Rica status are:

  • Family-Focused - Many of the inhabitants in Nicoya live in multi-generational households. There is a great deal of respect for the older generation and they often play an important role in the raising of grandchildren.

  • Strong Community - There is still a strong sense of community in the region, where everyone knows their neighbors and they support each other to reach common goals.

  • Less Meat - More Plants - The diet consists of fewer calories, less meat, and meals structured around typical Mesoamerican food staples like rice, beans, corn, and squash.

  • Stay Active - Many people walk as a primary method of transportation. They stay active with their grandchildren and through sports like soccer (futbol), swimming and surfing.

  • Work Hard - Nicoyans often have physically demanding jobs and they continue to work late into life. This constant physical activity keeps them healthy.

  • Hard Water - The water in the Nicoya region is significantly harder than the rest of the country and calcium-rich. This could help explain the lower rates of osteoporosis or bone fractures later in life.

  • Sun Exposure - The sun is a vital part of life and health, providing healthy doses of Vitamin D. We need to be mindful of the harmful effects of too much sun exposure, but a daily dose can do wonders for immunity and health.

  • Pura Vida -  The official motto of Costa Rica, which means Pure Life and it certainly is a lifestyle. They take things less seriously, move at a slower pace and don't see a rush to get things done. It is a method of living that truly embraces each moment.
